How Your System Works
Everything that leaves your house makes three stops. When one of them backs up, the whole system feels it. Here is the short version.

The Septic Tank
Waste leaves the house and settles. Solids drop to the bottom, grease floats to the top and the liquid in the middle moves on. Those solids build up, which is why the tank has to be pumped.

The Distribution Box
The liquid passes into the D box, which splits the flow evenly across the lines running out into your yard. A cracked or tilted D box overloads one line and starves the rest.

The Drain Field
The lines release the liquid into the soil, where the ground filters it naturally. Let solids reach the field and it clogs, and replacing a drain field costs many times what a pump out does.
Most Maryland homes should be pumped every two to three years. If you cannot remember your last one, it is time.
